This dawned on me when I recently read one of his short stories in an anthology and was instantly reminded that he is one of the greatest fantasy writers of our era, with a writing style and tone of his own, and a gift for bringing words, thoughts and emotions to life like no other. Todd McCaffrey’s first solo novel in the classic Dragonriders of Pern series, Dragonsblood, was hailed by critics and embraced by the countless devoted readers of the landmark science fiction saga created by his mother, Anne McCaffrey. It’s very early days on the project, but given that Warner Bros. has optioned the rights to the entire Dragonriders of Pern book series from American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey’s estate. It has spurred a large and intense fan following, and is notable for it progressive views pertaining to a number of societal issues. The sci-fi/fantasy series takes place in a pre-industrialized society that is comprised of lords, harpers, dragons, and much more. Since that time, 22 novels and a number of short stories have been released under the Dragonriders of Pern moniker, with McCaffrey’s son Tom McCaffrey co-authoring some of the books with Anne since 2003. Author Anne McCaffrey began the Dragonriders of Pern book series in 1968 with the release of Dragonflight. ![]() ![]() ![]() Even if, at first, the older woman isn’t as welcoming as Skyler could have hoped.
